Decorating vs. Organizing

I've been thinking a lot lately about decorating and organizing. While I enjoy reading magazines like House Beautiful, I could never really see my husband and I fitting in the spaces. The husband decidedly doesn't like things too decorated. However, we both want our spaces to look pulled together, and neither of us really like clutter. Of course, as my sister points out, other people's stuff is clutter, my things aren't.

I was reading an interview with Simplified Bee, where she stated that "clutter is visually exhausting." I think especially when you live in a small space (and have a decent amount of stuff), it's important to have some sort of organization. Our closet is sorely lacking in the organizational department. We have enough space for all of our things, but the problem is trying to figure out how to use the space efficiently, but still have it look nice. Do you care more about decorating or organizing? Of course, I don't really think you can have one without the other!

I was actually looking at organizing info on pinterest this weekend! I love organizing, always have! But now that we have a duplex and know we will be here for the next three years, I have really gotten into decorating! I think organizing is essential for every room in the house but I agree overdecorating can be a bit much! I try to add some fun decorative pieces in each room but try not to over do it! my hubby isn't a big fan of decorating, he hardly notices when I put a picture on the wall but he will let me know if something is a bit much hehe

I NEEEED BOTH! Now that I am officially a "grown up"..married and living in a "big girl" apartment, it is important to me that our space looks decorated and very "us." BUT of course we also need things organized. We have such a small place and organization is key. I'm actually going to be working on a lot of organization projects this week and weekend. I'm sick of the unnecessary things I've got hanging around!

i agree that you can combine them somewhat. i just started organizing/decorating my closet as well and am liking the direction it's going. more space, but definitely more appealing to the senses.

Such an interesting topic. I'm a fan of things looking lived in, but not cluttered. I guess I kind of walk the line between decorated and organized. I guess being the Queen of throwing things out helps us not get too cluttered around here. If something doesn't have a spot where it belongs I toss it. Can't wait to see what you all do with your closet.

Have a great week.

Yes, I'm obsessed with organizing. I try to make even my "hidden" spaces, like the closet and cabinets, look somewhat visually appealing. I like everything to be accessible and easy to get to. I think the first step in decorating is cutting out clutter, so you can start with a good, clean slate. I agree about House Beautiful-always gorgeous, but not realistic. You should DEFINITELY read The Perfectly Imperfect Home-it's all about having a comfortable, down to earth, but beautiful, clean space. Seriously, I think you would love it.

My closet is currently so small I can't organize much!

I care more about decorating thought, I would (and do) hide crap under my bed to have a beautiful shelf dresser.

I totally agree about not having one without the other. In some ways, I feel like organizing is a big part of decorating. If I see a beautifully organized space, it gives me the same feeling as a beautifully decorated space. Who knew???

Ugh I am so unorganized. You should see MY closet. Sometimes I get motivated...but never get very far. Sigh.

This is great! Love the tips and we always try to do a little of both! But with NYC closet space, we for sure need to stay organized, haha!
