Five for Friday!

Happy Friday!  We've had a quiet week with the only excitement from SC coming down with a bit of a cold on Wednesday night. I'm assuming she got sick from the toy carrot she licked at the library, but it could also have been her attempt to eat random things she finds off the driveway.  I doubt we will be cracking that mystery any time soon, so here are my five for Friday!
ONE
Aldi had a grand opening near us last Thursday, and I have high hopes that shopping there will help us reduce our grocery bill.  Our closest grocery store is Harris Teeter, which is nice, but I feel the prices can be absurdly high for a grocery store.  It is super close to us, so we are always going there for last minute items, but it drives my husband crazy.  I was impressed with Aldi when we went to visit, although I splurged on a few fresh flowers, so slashing the grocery budget could be a slow process. I think I've also mentally  "reallocated" the money we will save about ten times too!
TWO
I had two extra large picture frames lying around that I couldn't figure out a real use for,  so I decided to put some wrapping paper in the frames to see if I could use them for something then.  I felt kind of silly, but once I did that I realized that one would be a perfect little "tray" to use in my closet.
The other one was too big for the shelf to work as a tray, so I just set it in the background to add a little color.  Even though it is truly a small thing I was excited to make the shelves look a little more pulled together and also to eliminate random junk just sitting around.
THREE
Despite the fact that I did a pretty decent cleaning out of my closet last week, I still feel like I have nothing to wear.  It took me awhile, but when I was working, I created a bit of a "uniform" for myself with a pencil skirt, sweater, and scarf or necklace.  I can't seem to find something similar that works for me casually. In a moment that can only be described as a mid-life crisis I decided to buy (and keep) this top.  For some reason I actually like it, but the husband is not a fan, and I know it looks ridiculous.  Oh well, the other moms at the park can just stare at my ruffled disaster.

FOUR
Something that isn't a complete disaster is this dress from Old Navy.  It's easy to wear for every day, and I added a scarf and wore it to church last Sunday.

FIVE
To go with our pork chops on Wednesday night, I used this simple recipe to make baked apples and they turned out exactly how I had hoped!  My parents love baked apples, so I can't wait to make this for them.  In other cooking news, I also tried making the two ingredient banana pancakes for SC's breakfast.  While they weren't picture perfect, they turned out pretty good and SC seemed moderately enthused about them.
Well, that's all I have for this Friday, so I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Easter Egg Sign Hunt!

While I don't think that SC is quite ready for a huge egg hunt, she is pretty obsessed with plastic eggs, so I thought it would be fun to put a few in the backyard for her to find.
I kept seeing these cute little egg hunt signs at Target, and I decided to go ahead and just buy them.  I know that they are something you could make, but I felt like it was worth the three dollars not to have to try.  I had visions of SC running to the eggs and having a grand time amidst the little markers. I even put her in a cute dress and thought I'd snap a few photos to send the grandparents.
And then I put them out, and she happily pulled all of the little signs out of the ground, completely ignoring the eggs!  To help out with the game, I futilely ran around trying to stick the signs back into the ground.
Two signs have already been demolished and it isn't even April.  But she had a grand time!
We will see if she does any better come Easter day; by then won't have any cute little signs to distract her!

A Beachy Weekend!

On Friday one of my best friends and her son came up to spend the day with us! We didn't take too many pictures, but it really was such a wonderful day!  She arrived around 11:30am, and I got to show her our new house, made a simple meal of bbq chicken, and then we got our two toddlers down for naps. Considering that both of them were super excited, it actually went very smoothly.  During nap time we were able to have such a nice chat and then once our tots were up, we packed up for the beach.  Even though it was a bit chilly and windy, it was relaxing to be by the water. Driving home we were laughing so hard talking about silly stuff in college, which is fun to do now that we are two moms!
Even though our kiddos have met before, this trip they seemed to really like each other a lot.  SC is usually pretty shy, but she thought my friend's son was pretty much the greatest and most entertaining guy around.  At the end of the day, he didn't want to go home either.  Definitely our most enthusiastic house guest so far!

On Saturday, we  had a low key morning and then decided to go to the beach again because it was such a gorgeous day!
Sunday, we went to church, the husband played golf, and I got some organizing done around the house. It was so nice to have a quiet weekend!  How was yours?

Five for Friday!

This was one of those weeks where I felt like I was constantly playing catch up, as I tackled all of the laundry from our weekend trip and unpacking.  Sometimes, I feel like I'm in a laundry or paper towel commercial, except there is no stylist or make up artist to make life look glam. Anyways, it seems we are almost caught up, and I'm going to tackle tidying up momentarily because one of my best friend's is coming to visit with her son today! I can't wait to see her, even though I know it is going to be quite the event with two toddlers running around!
ONE
My friend's son likes the book Dinosaur Beach, and since we are going to the beach, I decided to buy him this little set. I'm hoping he will think it is neat.

TWO
Our library had Mindy Kaling's book out on display and I snatched it up and checked it out as fast as I possibly could.  I wanted to read it when it came out a long time ago, but had never gotten around to buying it.  It's a quick and entertaining read!
THREE
I also actually started to read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up in earnest.  Honestly, when I started it a month ago, I just got super annoyed and realized that I didn't feel like purging anything.  After life in the apartment for five years, having the space and a few things to fill it actually feels good.  With that said, it was starting to feel a bit cluttery (I blame SC), so I gave the book another chance.  While I'm still taking everything with a grain of salt, it did inspire me to start going through my clothes, and I actually have a bag of things to donate.  One thing I do think is useful about the book is she describes the "younger sister phenomenon" where the older sister tries to pawn things off on the younger sister.  I just tried this last weekend, so it was useful for me to realize that I should just donate the things I'm done with and everyone can move on with her life (sorry dear sister!).

FOUR
Naps have been a little off schedule this week, as SC recovered from all the excitement of visiting grandma and grandpa.  Last year my sister sent me this card, and I framed it and put it in her room for inspiration.
FIVE
One thing that SC has really started doing is waving goodbye to my husband and standing by the window to wait for him to come home.  It's really sweet how earnest she is.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

St. Patrick's Day and Birthday Celebrations!

Last Thursday my parents and sister came to visit us!  The time together was low key, and centered around SC as usual.  My parents headed back on Friday morning, but my sister stayed so we could have some extra time together.  Friday, our main outing was a quick trip to Old Navy, which wasn't terribly amusing to SC.   My sister bought me some cute pairs of socks and a shirt for SC, and I did a quick return.  That evening we took a few pictures to document that we were all wearing green for St. Patrick's Day!
Saturday morning we picked up some birthday breakfast at Chick Fila and then  packed up and drove to my parents for birthday celebrations!  My brother grilled burgers, we visited, and took turns entertaining SC and my niece.
I love how my husband is standing in the back...a safe distance from all the candles!
Having the time together was such a gift and I felt thoroughly celebrated.  My mom, sister and husband all have birthdays at the end of May, so I better start planning now!

Life Lately!

Before next weekend comes around, I wanted to do a little life lately!

ONE
The past two Fridays, I've done "Fajita Fridays", which seriously brings me so much amusement.  I love Mexican food, so that's probably a large part of why it makes me happy, but it also somehow just seems fun.  SC also thinks it is hilarious and giggles every time I roll up her tortilla. We won't be doing this every single Friday, but I have really enjoyed the last two Fridays!
Yes, I realize this technically isn't a fajita...
TWO
We went to church on Sunday, but this time tried our luck at the nursery.  It didn't last, so I think she will just be sticking with us in a pew outside the sanctuary and then we will visit the nursery when she gets restless.  At least we tried though!

THREE
After church we headed to Williamsburg to meet up with my parents, brother, sister-in-law and niece! My niece is getting more interactive and SC is definitely more interested! Our drive home was gorgeous.  It makes me so happy that the husband's work schedule means we actually have weekends together and we can do these things as a family.
FOUR
On Monday, SC and I drove back to Williamsburg to spend the day with my parents and had such a nice time.  We went to the pool and she loved it.  She also just eats up  all of the extra attention.
Today we went to a "stay and play" at the library, which SC enjoyed.  I think it is so nice that they do these types of programs and am seriously so grateful for our libraries.  We are having another little toddler over this afternoon for a play date, which is always entertaining.  Tomorrow my parents and sister are coming up to visit for my birthday, so I will be signing off for the rest of the week.  I'm so excited to be able to host them and have this time together! I hope you all have a lovely rest of the week and weekend!

Five for Friday

Happy Friday!  We've had a nice week, filled with story times, play dates and park time.  Here's what else we've been up to!

ONE
I can't believe that St. Patrick's Day is only a week away!  I'm not really a huge fan of the holiday, but my husband's family is part Irish, so I made up these little cards at Walgreens to send them.  They aren't anything fancy, but I think the grandparents will enjoy a little snail mail.
TWO
I know everyone probably knows about these snack cups, but I just picked up two of them before SC's plane ride.  They have been wonderful at stemming the steady spills of puffs. I'm not saying SC doesn't still leave a crumb trail wherever she goes, but I feel that I have a fighting chance now.  Is there anything else like this that I should have bought months ago?!
Taking out the trash apparently makes SC hungry
THREE
I've been sticking to my jogging every day (with the exception of Monday when I had a headache), and I really appreciate the time to just take it all in.
FOUR
I didn't make any new recipes this week, but last week I made a mango salsa pork tenderloin.  Neither SC or the husband were crazy about the mango, but the rub on the pork tenderloin was especially good.  It was just some brown sugar, smoked paprika, olive oil, salt and pepper.  It was a super easy meal I plan on making again this spring!
FIVE
The weather here this past week has been so lovely (although it is going to snow on Sunday!), so SC has been to the park lots this week.
So many aspects of  motherhood are actually pretty slow in the moment, and sometimes I think our days will always be filled with afternoon trips to the park followed by an examination of leaves in the driveway.  However, something about this week made me realize just how precious this time is and how lucky we are for the joy brought by swings, slides and sunshine.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

We wore red

It seemed the least we could do in honor of International Women's Day.  One (or both of us) may have ended up with a little banana smeared on us. Such is life.

Five for Friday: Spring in my Step!

The weather has been so nice that SC has been getting her fair share of time at the park and then some! We also did a little shopping to refresh things around the house...I probably shouldn't be visiting a TJ Maxx or a Home Goods for awhile.  I actually do go there for specific reasons, but then I walk out with a whole bunch of other things!
ONE
On trash day, I noticed that one of our neighbors had a little pedestal table out for pick up.  I kept on driving, but on my way back home, I decided to investigate.  It was missing a top, but I happened to have a piece of glass from another table that I don't really like and need to refinish anyways.  This is probably not exactly the best way to go about furnishing our house, but I was excited!
TWO
Last week, I stopped by our children's thrift store, and I picked up this toy for SC.  I thought it would be fun for her kitchen toys, and it was also still in its original packaging. It is supposed to be a beach toy (and we will definitely use it as that too), but she has also loved just playing with it around the house.  I thought maybe it would be too simple, but for some reason, taking the tops on and off the cupcakes keep her pretty entertained.
THREE
I picked up this cute print from Target, and I love how it adds a little color to our guest room.
Via
FOUR
I also bought this print for our master bedroom.  I haven't really decorated the space, but I thought this would be fun...because how many pictures of SC can one possibly display?
Via
FIVE
For Lent I am going jogging every day.  Wednesday wasn't the smoothest start, as my head really hurt, so I started on Thursday.  For extra motivation, I picked up this KS activity tracker at TJ Maxx, after reading about how Ashley at One Fine Day really likes hers. So far it is making me feel fancy!
We don't have any weekend plans, so I'm hoping we can catch up with some things around the house and such!  I hope you have a wonderful one!
