We got a new bed!

So, when the mother-in-law came up to visit, the husband and I upgraded to a queen bed and it has been absolutely amazing.  I cannot believe how much of a difference six inches can make.  The husband has been working really late (a case of his is going to trial so he will be MIA for the next few weeks), and its great to have the extra space to not worry about disturbing each other too much.  BUT a queen bed means that we have no sheets.  Fortunately, when we got married, my uncle gave us this queen comforter ala K-Mart (we're classy like that).  I actually think it looks fine (please ignore all the wrinkles and the fact that we have no art or curtains). Also, our "nightstands" are actually a nesting table taken apart.  Yes, we definitely are living with the relics of parental furniture rejects and thankful for them!
However, now that we are both out of school and have been working for awhile, we feel a bit more comfortable making our furnishings more adult. But here's the thing; now that I can actually do something, I'm reluctant to do so.  I think the thing is that I want to make sure whatever I buy we really love and I don't make a mistake.  I also have the husband's rather picky taste to consider.  And by picky, I mean he won't let me drape everything with pink and aqua/turquoise/blue. For some reason he doesn't really like light blue, which is the color I find most calming.  So here's what I've been thinking of for the bedroom thus far in terms of comforters ( and it has to be a comforter; the husband doesn't like duvets).
I really like this comforter.  It's from Target and feels pretty nice, plus it won't break the bank.  I've also been really a big fan of gray lately.  The only problem is that it is floral and I worry that it might be too dark.

So I am also thinking about this, but I don't think I will waste our money since it's very similar to what we already have.
And I have to admit that a part of me is almost tempted to do a black and white bedroom such as this.  However, the husband really love earth tones and I think I'd tire of black and white all the time.  Plus, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to get away with it!

So what do you all think?

Hello, again!

Hello, dear friends!  I'm afraid I took a bit of an accidental blogging break. Last week was pretty stressful at work, and then the husband's mom came to visit this past weekend.  I'm afraid everything left me a bit frazzled. The other two people in my office are leaving, so this transition period is...interesting.  The husband felt so bad for me last week, that he actually sent these lovely flowers to me at work.  They definitely perked me up and gave me a little perspective.   Before you think I'm too spoiled, I'd like to share that in the almost eight years that we've been together, this is the second time my frugal husband has sent me flowers from a florist. (The other time was for my grandpa's funeral, so you know he felt bad for me!) What's been going on with you lately?  I'm looking forward to catching up!

Recently Acquired

Last weekend, I was on the hunt for a black dress to wear to a memorial  I had to attend related to work.  I couldn't find one (isn't that always how it is?), but I did find this dress from BR.
I'm still on the fence if I'm going to keep it.  It's a lovely dress to wear to any special events for the summer.  I don't think any are on the horizon; however, I'm tempted to keep it.  If there is anything I've learned from my black dress search, it's that when you find classic pieces, you should make sure you snatch them up!  What pieces do you think are essential?

Ideas for a Potluck?

Image via Food Network
So the husband and I are going to a work potluck for him on Monday.  As an abysmal cook, the word potluck makes me want to break out into hives. Usually, I just bring veggies, fruit or hummus and call it a day, but this time I really want to try to cook something.  I've already decided that I'll be bringing Oreo cupcakes, because it's a recipe that easy and pretty tasty.  Plus, I've done it before and they've been a success. However, I think just bringing a dessert to a potluck isn't the best idea (because sometimes you end up with just desserts).  Also, as a vegetarian, I want to bring something I can eat, so I'm trying to come up with something easy that I can make the night before and tastes best served cold.  Here are my options.
1. Deviled Eggs- They are super easy, but I guess everyone makes them and brings them.  I'd like to point out that it took me awhile to even think of bringing these...
2. Black Bean Salad from the Food Network- This looks pretty easy, but I've never made it before, so I'm a little leery.
3. Broccoli Salad also from the Food Network- This isn't terribly original either, but it looks easy. I'd take out the bacon and maybe add sunflower seeds and hope for the best.

So, dear readers, any suggestions or input?  I'd really love advice.

On Sunday night the husband and I went to a Coldplay concert.  I'm a huge fan of the band, so after finding the most inexpensive tickets we could, we decided to splurge.  The concert did not disappoint. (In case you haven't noticed, the husband and I don't get out to concerts very much, but it seems like this was the one to go to.)  Coldplay put on a great show.  Everyone received a synchronized light wristband that created an audience light show. It's kind of hard to describe, but suffice to say, it was a wonderful concert.  And after listening to the band for over ten years, it was pretty gratifying to see them live!
Here we are before the concert, outside the arena.  The husband thinks it's important for you to know that he's wearing his "bird shirt", which has no significance at all.  Except he has had it since undergrad, so it's probably been around as long as I've been listening to Coldplay.
And finally, here I am in the shirt that we bought at the concert.  I'd like to think that I'm not one of those people who normally do this, but I did.  And I really love my new shirt; I can't wait to do laundry! Have you been to any summer concerts recently?  It was fun to read that some other bloggers also saw Coldplay.

Our First Fourth of July in D.C.!

The Fourth of July has come and gone, but I never did a post on it! As I said earlier, this Fourth was pretty special because my sister and her boyfriend came up.  It was also special because it was our first Fourth in Washington.  On Tuesday night we started out with dinner at Founding Farmers.

We even made it to dessert! On the fourth, we had brunch at a local restaurant in Arlington and just spent some time chatting.  We then visited the Building Museum, which was actually really interesting.  The husband thought it was so interesting that it deserves its own post, so I'll be doing that later this week. See all of our patriotic spirit? If you look in the distance, you can see the Washington Monument.  The husband and I were lazy and watched the fireworks from our balcony.  We had pretty good view, all things considered!
I even made a little parfait.  I love my sister's enthusiasm.  She took this picture specifically for the blog. All in all, it was a great Fourth, and it was wonderful to see my sister.

Boden's Summer Sale!

Boden's summer sale has started, as I found out from My Superfluities.  I was pretty excited to check out the sale, because I love some of Boden's prints.  A few weeks ago, I purchased this skirt when they were running a promotion. I was worried it would be marked down further with the sale, but it's exactly the same price, so I don't feel bad. The skirt finally arrived, and, just as I'd hoped, all the colors work well with lots of tops and accessories I already own.  (I'm a little embarrassed to share this picture, but I wanted to share in case anyone is considering making a purchase.)
I'm wearing a navy blue sweater in this shot, but I think a green or pink top could also look nice and create a different look.  I think I'm done with my summer shopping for awhile now, but I'm really pleased to add this to my closet.  I think it will work well in the fall and spring too.  Have you been doing any summer shopping lately?  It seems that there is always some temptation!

Happy Fourth of July!

The storm on Friday night certainly changed the weekend plans.  We lost power on Friday night and still didn't have it Saturday morning.  Since we live on the 14th floor and it was pretty hot outside, we spent a bit of time plotting how we were going to deal with the power outage.  Fortunately, power was restored later that afternoon, but it certainly reminded us how reliant on power we are. It seems that power won't be fully restored to D.C, until the end of this week, which is awful. On Monday, my work still didn't have power, so I had some time to take a quick trip home to visit my family.  I'm pretty excited, because my sister and her boyfriend are coming up for the fourth.  I decorated our balcony for them and wrapped up some caramels for my sister.  (I realize it's a bit tacky. The husband isn't a fan, but I actually got the stars for free thanks to our staff party). I have to admit, this is the first time in awhile I've been so excited about this holiday.  I hope everyone has a happy Fourth of July!
